Fall 2013 is on the agenda, but here at Paris Fashion Week, spring is in the air. It’s been deliciously sunny over the past few days with fashion warriors shedding winter for bright spring outfits. If Carine Roitfeld can do head-to-toe cream and caramel, bare legs and open-toe shoes (as seen at Hôtel de Crillon), then the rest of us can too. Black, however, is still a dominant hue on the catwalk and the sidewalk, but every now and again a flash of brightness taps you on the shoulder and says, “regarde-moi.”

Here are Paris Fashion Week’s top four colour moments for Fall 2013.

1. Saint Laurent
Grunge is back and somehow fresh again. The downtown princess attire consisted of thigh-high hems and random layers for that I-just-got-out-of-bed appearance. What stood out though were the red or blue plaid shirts, thrown over sparkly party dresses for the ultimate in mismatched magic.

2. Giambattista Valli
Are we moving away from colour blocking? Monochromatic poppy red will turn all heads, especially in Valla’s front-pleated slacks tapered at the ankle, provocative petal skirts and long, oversized coats with detachable panels.

Sometimes a woman feels like puttin’ on the Ritz. Whether it’s worn by Marlene Dietrich, Bianca Jagger or Rihanna, a tuxedo suit has the power to ignite a room faster than any little black dress. With its sharp lines, classic appeal and feminine details—a frilly shirt here, a rhinestone bow-tie there—it’s little wonder that fashion houses like Lanvin, Stella McCartney, Saint Laurent and Ermanno Scervino have reimagined this iconic eveningwear look for Spring 2013.

The first haute couture tuxedo suit—a black velvet pantsuit with a matching vest and a white shirt with ruffled cuffs—was designed by Yves Saint Laurent in 1966. Dubbed Le Smoking, this gender-bending look instantly caught fire, and soon afterward the designer launched his ready-to-wear label, Rive Gauche, with more accessibly priced smoking suits. The timing couldn’t have been better, since the second wave of the women’s emancipation movement marched into the history books that same decade. Power dressing after dark was now an exercise in equal opportunity.

Best of BoF 2012

LONDON, United Kingdom — It’s that time again when we take a look back at the people, places and innovations that have defined the year in the business of fashion.

And what a year it’s been. From the debuts of new heavyweight designers at megabrands Dior and Yves Saint Laurent to the flurry of digital innovations and the rising markets of India, China and Brazil, we’ve covered it all.

It was a particularly special year for BoF, as we celebrated our 5th birthday at events in New York, London and Florence, packed with our friends and supporters from across the BoF community, further emboldening us to continue BoF’s development into a must-read resource for fashion professionals around the world. We are grateful for the support our community has shown us this past year, and are looking forward to the fruitful years ahead.

But now, it’s time for even BoF to take a break from the fashion frenzy. We will be off until 3 January, 2013. Until then, we look back at the best of BoF in 2012.
