Those old directions for How To Make A Nuclear Family — grow up, find a man, get married, and have a baby — seem so dated, so simplistic, it’s almost laughable. Modern women are staying in school longer, going after more advanced degrees, and are delaying childbirth. Birth rates for women aged 35 to 39 increased nearly 50% between 1990 and 2008, according to Pew Research. And, the number of women aged 40 or older who have babies tripled over the same timespan.

Among women who want to have children, more are reaching their professional and educational goals before becoming mothers. And, why not? It’s natural for successful women, who have made careers of pragmatically setting goals and achieving them, to think they can apply the same strategies to pumping out a kid or two. Besides, if Hollywood is any indication, it feels more and more logical for 40-something women to be packing so called “baby bumps” on the regular. (Though the experts we talked to for this story say that these pregnancies are most likely achieved via donor eggs).

Then we watched as she hopped from Details to an editorial perch at Jane to Google, Starworks, Nowness, and a clutch of other coveted places. All the while she was working on other intriguing projects, including a documentary on Cuban music. As we catch up with her now, the South Beach native is happily ensconced in her new life, simultaneously acting as a curator of eBay's Inside Source site; hosting her own Cuban-inflected Internet radio show; and running Sugar Barons, her bloggy platform for discussing tech, arts, and culture. It's remarkable she had any time to talk with us at all, but here she is chatting about her complicated history, multitasking, and flipping through eBay's virtual closet.

When you're a normal guy, you retire from your profession when you've reached a nice, ripe age, having left behind a legacy of 50+ years of hard work. But, when you're David Beckham, you retire at the age of 38 to become a full-time sexy person who may or may not design clothes.

In the wake of his decision to leave behind his career as a professional soccer player, everyone is wondering what Becks will do next. A close source has said, "Over the next year, we will see his business grow and expand. The sky is the limit, really, in terms of what he can do globally. Just look at what Victoria has done." We're going to call that the understatement of the year, considering he has already taken the world by storm just by running around in his underwear. But, does this mean we will see him take on a more hands-on role in the fashion space?

IN the early 20th Century, tiger hunting was all the rage. King George V went looking for them after a good lunch with the Nepalese King. In 1902, Lieutenant Colonel Frank Sheffield went tiger hunting. He recorded his adventures in How I killed the tiger; being an account of my encounter with a royal Bengal tiger.

He tells his readers:

My main purpose in writing this little book, was to place in a permanent form a description of my wonderful preservation from death in a chance encounter with a Royal Bengal Tiger. My life had been adventurous up to that time. I had shot big game of various kinds. But this episode, so marvellous in itself, so important in its influence upon my after life and character, marks the close of my career as a hunter of big game.

Men who are physically strong are more likely to take a right wing political stance, while weaker men are inclined to support the welfare state, according to a new study.

Researchers discovered political motivations may have evolutionary links to physical strength.

Men’s upper-body strength predicts their political opinions on economic redistribution, according to the research.

Put another way, this study says that liberals are a coalition of rich wimpy men and strong poor men. By contrast, conservatives are a coalition of rich strong men and poor weak men.

Women are universally weak so don’t figure in the study.
